Land Secured for Final Phase of Lagoon Community in Hernando County

Metro Development Group has closed on a major land acquisition, securing the final phase of Sandal Key, a nearly 900-acre master-planned community in Hernando County. This milestone paves the way for the completion of the highly anticipated Inland Coastal Paradise. Located just east of Highway 19 and south of Hexam Road in Weeki Wachee, the development will introduce approximately 3,000 homes alongside an expansive lagoon, miles of scenic trails, and a variety of resort-style amenities.
“Sandal Key brings the Metro Lagoon lifestyle to Hernando County while blending innovation with a coastal-inspired experience,” said Lisa Gibbings, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Metro Development Group. “From our signature lagoon amenity to miles of trails and exclusive 55+ amenities, this development will redefine modern living in the region. The demand for thoughtfully designed communities continues to grow, and we are proud to create a destination where residents can enjoy an active and vibrant lifestyle.”
Sandal Key’s standout feature will be a multi-acre lagoon, offering stunning blue waters and a hub for recreation and relaxation. Complementing the lagoon will be miles of interconnected walking and biking trails, a natural walking path around Lake Whitehurst, gated entries, a dog park, a children’s play area, and an array of exclusive amenities designed for active adults.
Metro closed on a key land deal on February 11, 2025, reinforcing the company’s commitment to delivering a fully realized vision for future residents.
Initial construction is already underway on roads, residential lots, and key amenity areas, with development of the Lagoon scheduled to begin later this year. Sandal Key will blend natural beauty and innovative technology—including lightning-fast ULTRAFi internet and solar-powered Streetleaf lighting. Builders include D.R. Horton, Lennar, and KB Homes.
